It won’t be long before the specialized peony shops start showing their new offering for the coming season (harvest 2021). Most do this December/January so it’s a good idea to have a look at the website of your favorite trusted peony site to see when they’ll start their new offer as rare and new introductions are usually sold out incredibly fast. The well-known ‘Peony Shop Holland’ has just uploaded their new listing, which is rather early to do so. It features some rare new (and to me: unknown) peonies like Magistic Center at a stellar price of 4,000 € (well above the introduction price of Bartzella several decades ago), but also some more affordable new ones. Some that I would recommend and that were previously far more expensive: Vanilla Schnapps (85€), Sonoma YeDo (for ‘Yellow Double’, supposedly the most double yellow intersectional) (75€), Grand Massive (80€), Colonel Owen Cousins (35€). And if you’re placing an order for some of those, you might as well consider these ones, not as new, but very good: Salmon Dream (17), Petite Elegance (17), Pastel Splendor (17), Etched Salmon (25), Allan Rogers (15). Except for Sonoma Yedo and Colonel Owen Cousins, I’ve grown all of them and consider them excellent peonies that should normally not disappoint.

    • As chance would have it, I just found out that Colonel Owen Cousins can have a very poor plant habit with the stems easily leaning down due to the heavy flowers. Somewhat better in cold climates it seems, but I guess not the best recommendation. https://www.facebook.com/groups/1216285451864393/permalink/1763030040523262/

    • Interesting to see that Joshua is already sold out of a number of items. Not necessarily the most expensive things, but some of the more common things too. Growers need to be able to estimate the sort of yield that they will get from their plants, as orders taken now are for fall divisions which will be taken from plants which have not even begun to grow yet ! It would be nice to be able to see his seedlings, but unless one can actually go to his fields and see them, as with most new things, all we have are the pictures to go on. I’m not sure who’s going to pay thousands of dollars for the set of expensive ones that he’s selling, but the prices alone are garnering him a lot of attention, so even if none of them are sold, they’ve already done good work for him and his business in that regard!
As an aside, I’ll admit that I don’t pay much attention to intersectionals, but I do get a chance to see them, and I think you are right in thinking that Sonoma YeDo is impressive, and the most double yellow of them all.
