Seedling number NB-SH51. Parentage: ‘Anna Marie’ x ‘Kamata Fuji’, thus an advanced generation Lutea hybrid. First bloomed and propagated 2008. Large SINGLE bluish lavender flowers. Color intensifies towards the center of the flower. Inner petals are darker than the outer petals. Petals are narrow and very elongated with fluting and small rough notching along the outer edges. Petals also curl and twist. Four to eight green carpels entirely covered by violet-purple sheath stigmas are pink, filaments are same hue as sheath, tipped with white twisted anthers. No fertility observed to date. Leaves are very large and deep green, resembling oversized P. ostii foliage. Stems may make annual growth of 3 feet (90 cm) or more, attaining final height of 4 feet (122 cm) but are sometimes winter killed in Wisconsin, only to regrow from basal buds and bloom the same year. May grow taller in more reasonable climates. An unusual flower and plant that conjures up visions of creatures from the ocean depths. Excellent, and we look forward to seeing it each year.
