The Paeonia obovata group is widely distributed in the forests of East-Asia (China, Russia, Japan, Korea). It is distinguished from other groups by its leaves with 9 entire leaflets, solitary flowers, and glabrous carpels. The number of species in this group varies depending on authors. P. obovata ssp obovata, P. obovata ssp willmottiae, P. japonica, P. oreogeton and P. vernalis have all been considered (sub)species.
